Hearing
Tests

If you suffer from tinnitus (ringing in your ears) or suspect you have hearing loss or some other auditory ailment, your treatment will likely start with a hearing test. This straight-forward and comfortable procedure can provide your audiologist with valuable information. Depending on the tests required, comprehensive hearing exams last approximately 45 to 60 minutes for most adults.

What Happens During a Hearing Test?

If you have never been tested by a hearing care expert, you may not know what to expect. At Alltones Audiology, we bring the hearing evaluation to you. Conducting these tests in the comfort of your own home and in your actual living environment allows us to provide you with a more comprehensive treatment plan that is tailored to your exact needs. Our professional hearing tests will give you the opportunity to understand your hearing ability and explore any possible options, such as hearing aids or other devices.

Before We Start the Test

Since hearing loss is different for each individual, we take the time to get to know you personally. Before your hearing screening starts our audiologist will ask you a few simple questions about your family history, lifestyle, and whether you have difficulty hearing when there is a lot of background noise or multiple people talking. Understanding your unique concerns can help us ensure that we provide the best solution for your hearing loss.

Examination of Your Ears

The physical part of a hearing test involves the audiologist examining the health of your ears. With the help of an Otoscope, we will look safely and comfortably inside the ear canal for signs of wax build-up, infection, or damage.

Baseline Hearing Test

A baseline test is an initial exam that will form the comparison for later tests. This allows us to measure if your hearing is worsening. This test is conducted using pitches and tones and determines those you hear and those you don’t. We will place a set of headphones over your ears and check each ear individually. Then, we will ask you to respond to every sound you hear. Once we have established your baseline test results, we will share them with you and help you understand how we can improve your hearing. Even if you suffer from minimum or no hearing loss, we will be able to advise you on the best ways to keep your hearing health at its best.

Speech Testing

During speech testing we will discover how well you can hear and understand conversations. By playing a series of sounds and words at varying levels of loudness, pitch, and intensity, we can determine when you are and are not able to understand speech. This test also helps determine what level of hearing loss you have.
